Indoor Pull Rule discussion group
Please note that for clarification this post was updated on 22nd March 2023.
Due to a fantastic response, the form linked below is now closed. Thank you very much to those who have volunteered your time, we will be in touch shortly.
We are looking for a cross section of people, who either play Indoors or who are interested in the Indoor format, to discuss changing the Indoor Pull Rule. We would like to hear from people across X/W/O and those from Club, University and Junior divisions.
The current Indoor Pull Rule was written by UKU volunteers more than 10 years ago. The rule set out how to keep the basic flow of play (one team scores, teams change ends, O-pulls-to-D, etc) whilst recognising some of the challenges arising from the small, enclosed sports halls that are common in the UK. It has always been a kind of pragmatic compromise. This year we have seen a growing trend for ‘Guts'-style, head-height pulls thrown hard and fast, directly at an individual on the O-line. This is a dangerous, and certainly unintended, consequence of the way the current rule is written. We believe it needs to be changed. You can find the UKU Indoor rules of Ultimate here.
We would like to bring some people together to see if we can come up with an alternative approach to the current pull rule in the UKU Indoor Rules of Ultimate, adaptated from the WFDF rules and used at all UKU Indoor tournaments. If that group can come up with a viable alternative, then any change will have to be agreed by the Competition Committee, primarily led by the Indoor Director of Competitions, as has been the case for all the previous iterations of the UKU-specific Indoor rules that we have had in place for many years. We would expect to do a bit more consultation at that point to try to gather opinion on the basis of two specific alternatives. [added 22 Mar 2023]
