Eligibility for UKU University Ultimate events
A message from Emily Powell, University Coordinator:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION - ELIGIBILITY
We have had a high number of enquiries regarding eligibility to play at regionals and wish to tease out some details, mainly regarding eligibility of students who have paused studies or have handed in their thesis early in semester 1.
To be eligible for university competitions you must be completing 60 credits a year and have paid your AU/SU membership. There are a number of other requirements that can be found following the link below:
I have outlined two of the most common questions we’ve received below. For those who played regionals this past weekend and are now discovering you are not actually eligible, or know of people who fit these criteria, please get in touch with me (unicoordinator@ukultimate.com) to discuss.
IF YOU WERE PLANNING ON PLAYING REGIONALS AND ARE NOW DISCOVERING YOU ARE INELIGIBLE, DO NOT PLAY. Any players found to be breaking these rules having been warned will be dealt with in line with UKU policy.
I have handed in my thesis in September and did my course through season 21/22, but haven’t graduated. Am I eligible?
Generally no. See BUCS rules 4.2.2 and 4.2.2.1
REG 4.2.2 A student satisfactorily finishing their course of study after the start of December will be eligible to participate until the end of the season provided their Athletic Union or equivalent subscription has been paid and their institution still classifies them as a registered student.
REG 4.2.2.1 Satisfactorily finishing a course of study is not when a student graduates, but is deemed to be when their teaching, research and/or examinations are completed.
You may have seen players compete in the past who you think did not meet these criteria. That might be because they mistakenly believed themselves to be eligible; it might be that they actually were still eligible (perhaps due to being on a research programme where there was a gap between handing-in and examination), or it might be because there was something in their circumstances that led to them being granted an exception (in the mixed division only).
I have paused my studies. Am I eligible?
No. You must be completing 60 credits a year to be eligible, which you are not if you have paused your studies.
You are responsible for knowing and following the rules.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me using the email address above.
